I’ve always wanted to help people
I’ve been feeling excited about work for the first time in like eight months, thanks to one of your book recommendations! I’ve been enjoying Simon Sinek’s Start With Why and feeling inspired now that I have been reminded of my WHY, the reasons why I do the work that I do.
Because of this I’ve been reviewing my personal website as I’m in the process of revamping some of the work/services that I offer. A few times in my website copy it says “I’ve always wanted to help people” which is true and as I spent some time thinking about what exactly that means to me a memory came to mind.
“I’ve always wanted to help people” …help people do what? I want to help people be successful in just about anything that is important to them, really. So then I started thinking about the kinds of things I’ve helped people with in the past, and I remembered a pretty random one.
Back in school, my then-boyfriend was struggling in his Intro to Sociology class and had a major test coming up. I wasn’t in the class and had never taken a sociology class before but I wanted to help. So I went to Barnes & Noble and bought what was probably the equivalent of Sociology for Dummies, then I read it in less than two days to prepare myself for helping him prep for the test.
What a funny thing for a teen to do! In retrospect he didn’t really care about the class, although he wanted good grades, and I’m sure I really wasn't that helpful not actually being in the class. So at this point I’d do some things differently but I’d say that’s still me in a nutshell, always curious and always learning, even if it’s not something I am directly passionate about. If it’s important to you then I’m down to help in whatever way I can.
So refreshing to be reminded of WHY I do what I do. And a good tip to remember for the moments/months when you are feeling bogged down and uninspired - make sure you know your WHY.
(I apologize for the ultimate cliff-hanger, I have no recollection of how the test went or what kind of grade he got in the class haha but he ultimately graduated so it must have worked out ok!)
